Baby names by nakshatra

In many Hindu families the first letter of a baby’s name comes from the birth star. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas (quarters), and each pada has its own syllable. Enter the birth date, time and place to find the nakshatra and pada, then browse names that begin with that sound.

How to use it

  1. Enter the baby’s date, time and place of birth, or choose the nakshatra if you already know it.
  2. See the birth star, the pada, the Moon sign and the lucky first letter.
  3. Browse boy or girl names that start with that syllable, search by meaning, and save the ones you like.

Nakshatra syllables, a few examples

  • Ashwini: Chu, Che, Cho, La
  • Rohini: O, Va, Vi, Vu
  • Pushya: Hu, He, Ho, Da
  • Hasta: Pu, Sha, Na, Tha
  • Anuradha: Na, Ni, Nu, Ne
  • Revati: De, Do, Cha, Chi

When the time is not known

The Moon spends about a day in each nakshatra and changes pada about every six hours. If the birth time is missing and the Moon changed nakshatra that day, the tool shows both possibilities instead of guessing. If you are unsure of the pada, you can see the syllables of all four.

Questions people ask

Is the naming letter the same as the rashi letter?

The syllable comes from the nakshatra pada, which also fixes the Moon sign (rashi), so the two always agree.

Do I have to use the nakshatra letter?

It is a tradition, not a rule. Many families use it for the naming-ceremony name and choose another name for everyday use.

Are the names free?

Yes. Finding the birth star, the first letter and browsing names is free, and you can save favourites on your device.
