Griha Pravesh muhurat: how to choose a good date

The months, tithis, nakshatras and weekdays traditionally preferred for griha pravesh, what to avoid, and how to pick a date that suits your family.

Moving into a new home is one of the happiest days for a family, and most Indian households want to begin it at an auspicious time. A griha pravesh muhurat brings together the season, the lunar day, the Moon's nakshatra, the weekday and the rising sign. Here is how each is traditionally chosen.

Three kinds of griha pravesh

  • Apurva: entering a newly built or newly bought home for the first time.
  • Sapurva: returning to a home after a long absence, such as a long stay abroad.
  • Dwandvah: entering again after major repairs or rebuilding.

The strictest rules apply to Apurva, the first entry into a new house.

Months that are preferred

The months of Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are traditionally the most favoured for griha pravesh. In the common calendar they fall roughly from late January to June, depending on the year.

Periods usually avoided:

  • Chaturmas, the four monsoon months from Devshayani to Devuthani Ekadashi.
  • Adhik Maas, the extra lunar month added in some years.
  • Kharmas, when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces, roughly mid-December to mid-January and mid-March to mid-April.
  • Times when Jupiter or Venus is combust (asta), close to the Sun and not visible.

Tithi (lunar day)

The bright half of the month, Shukla Paksha, is preferred. Good tithis include Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi and Trayodashi. The Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi) and Amavasya are avoided.

Nakshatra

Stable, gentle nakshatras are chosen so that the family settles well: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati.

Weekday

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are generally preferred. Tuesday and Saturday are usually avoided for the first entry, and many families avoid Sunday as well.

The rising sign (lagna)

Within a good day, astrologers look for a fixed rising sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius), which is associated with stability and permanence. The exact entry time is then set inside that window, avoiding Rahu Kaal.

Your family's own charts

A date that is good in general can still be weak for a particular family. Astrologers therefore also check the Moon's strength (Chandra bala) and the birth-star relationship (Tara bala) for the head of the household. This is why two families may be given different dates in the same month.

On the day

Customs vary by region, but many families begin with Ganesh puja and Vastu puja, enter with a kalash of water, step in with the right foot first, and boil milk in the new kitchen until it overflows as a sign of abundance. If a full puja is planned, ask your priest how long it needs so that the main ritual falls inside the muhurat.

Common questions

Can we move our things in before the griha pravesh? Many families shift furniture and belongings beforehand but do not cook or sleep there until the griha pravesh is done. Customs differ, so follow your family's practice.

Is a rented home also given a muhurat? Yes, many people still choose a good day to move into a rented home, usually with a simpler puja. The strict rules mainly apply to the first entry into a home you own.

What if no good date fits our moving deadline? Choose the best available day in the bright half of the month, avoid Rahu Kaal and the Rikta tithis, and keep the main ritual inside a good choghadiya. An astrologer can then suggest a suitable remedy if needed.
