About Vitthal Kakad Aarti (Phalale Bhagya Majhe)

A Kakad aarti (sung at dawn) from the Marathi Varkari tradition. The devotee tells how, by the grace of the Sadguru, he saw Pandharpur and Vitthal within himself, how his sense of "I" fell away, and how an aarti of Vitthal blazed inside him so bright that the sun and moon faded in it.

Text: Nivritti (the name in the closing line) (pre-1911 (in the book's first edition))

Text and meaning

Stanza 1

phaḷaleṃ bhāgya mājheṃ | dhanya jhāloṃ saṃsārīṃ | sadguru bheṭale ho | tyānīṃ dhariyeleṃ karīṃ | paścime cālavīleṃ | ātmā tetheṃ nirdhārī | trikuṭāvarī nāṃde | dekhiyelī paṃḍharī || 1||

My fortune has borne fruit; I am blessed in this worldly life. I met the Sadguru, and he took me by the hand. He led me along the western path (the inner path of yoga), where the Self surely is. Dwelling at Trikuta (the point between the brows), I saw Pandhari.

Refrain

teṃ sukha kāya sāṃgūṃ | vāceṃ bolatā naye | āratīceni yogeṃ | geleṃ mīpaṇa māye || dhṛ0||

How can I describe that joy? Words cannot tell it. Through this aarti, mother, my sense of "I" has gone.

Stanza 2

rāuḷāmājīṃ jātāṃ | rāhe deha-avasthā | mana heṃ unmana jhāleṃ | nase baddhatecī vārtā | heṃtu hā māvaḷalā | śabdā ālī niḥśabdvatā | taṭastha houni ṭheleṃ | nijarūpa pāhatāṃ ||2||

As I went into the temple, awareness of the body stopped. The mind passed beyond mind; there was no more talk of bondage. Every motive set like the sun, words fell into silence; seeing my true form, I stood still.

Stanza 3

triguṇa guṇa bāī | pūrṇa ujaḷalyā vātī | navalāva avināśa | na jāye svayaṃjyotī | lāvitāṃ lakṣa tetheṃ | hālūṃ visaralīṃ pātīṃ | nātuḍe mana mājheṃ | na kaḷe divasarātī ||3||

Friend, the three gunas became wicks and blazed in full. This wondrous, undying, self-lit flame does not go out. Fixing my attention there, my eyelids forgot to blink; my mind cannot be caught, and I no longer know day from night.

Stanza 4

āratī viṭhṭhalācī | pūrṇa ujaḷalī aṃtarīṃ | prakāśa thora jhālā | sāṃṭhavenā aṃbarīṃ | raviśaśi māvaḷale | tayā tejāmājhārīṃ | vājatīṃ divyavādye | anahata gajarīṃ ||4||

The aarti of Vitthal blazed fully within. So great a light arose that the sky could not hold it. The sun and moon set within that radiance, and divine instruments played in the roar of the unstruck sound (anahata).

Stanza 5

ānaṃdasāgarāṃta | premeṃ buḍī didhalī | lādhaleṃ saukhya moṭheṃ | naye bolatāṃ bolīṃ sadgurūceni saṃgeṃ | aisī āratī kelī | nivṛtti ānaṃdāṃta | tetheṃ vṛtti nimālī ||5||

With love I plunged into the ocean of bliss and found a happiness too great to put into words. In the company of the Sadguru such an aarti was performed. Nivritti is in bliss; there every movement of the mind came to rest.

The book names no author; the closing line contains the name "Nivritti". The printed lines are kept; only the alignment spaces before stanza numbers are reduced to one. Spellings such as "हेंतु" and "निःशब्द्वता" are the printed text's. The closing name-chant "विठ्ठल, विठ्ठल..." is not included.
